For those who don’t know about Paradime… a bar brawler of an artist who’s been in this game for a minute… a Detroit native spawned from the same thoroughbred stock as Eminem… nothing but hardcore from the ground up uncut… HipHopSiX speaks with the Dime! ![]() SiX: Sup man! Thanks for taking this timeout here. For those who don’t know, break down your career for us cos you’ve been in this game for a minute and you’ve worked with the very best… let’s go on a timeline and reminisce where you came from and the ranks you rose through… Paradime: WELL.. LONG STORY SHORT… I STARTED RHYMING AS A KID. I CAME UP ON RAKIM AND KRS THROUGH THE ERA OF THE REAL EMCEE. LIKE ALL THE DETROIT LEGENDS, I SPENT THE LATE 90’S AT THE HIP HOP SHOP AND ST. ANDREW’S, AND THAT’S WHERE I CAME TO MEET ALL THE CATS THAT EVENTUALLY BECAME MY FRIENDS, OR FLAT OUT HIP HOP HEAVYWEIGHTS. I DROPPED MY FIRST ALBUM IN ’99, CALLED “PARAGRAPHS”, FORMED MY OWN RECORD LABEL, AND FROM THERE ITS BEEN ON. IF IT HAPPENED IN DETROIT, I WAS THERE, OR RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER. __________________________________ IT’S A BLUE COLLAR CITY WHERE NOTHING IS FREE - YOU GOTTA STRUGGLE AND SCRAP FOR EVERYTHING YOU GET __________________________________ SiX: Speak to us about being from Detroit… of course Em put the D on the map as did Kid Rock, but Detroit has a strong as hell scene away from their names - and you’ve always been one of the main underpins to that… you feel that the D shaped you as an artist and in what ways? OH YEA MAN, NO QUESTION. DETROIT ALWAYS HAD ITS OWN STYLE AND ITS OWN GRITTYNESS. YOU CAN HEAR IT IN THE VOICES AND WORDS OF THE MAFUCKAS WHO ROSE UP HERE. IT’S A BLUE COLLAR CITY WHERE NOTHING IS FREE AND YOU GOTTA STRUGGLE AND SCRAP FOR EVERYTHING YOU GET. THAT SHAPES YOU AS AN ARTIST WHETHER YOU WANT IT TO OR NOT. BUT AT THE SAME TIME, THERE’S A BUILT IN SARCASM AND SENSE OF HUMOR TO US TOO. WE’RE SMART-ASSES, LOUD-MOUTHS, JOKERS, PRANKSTERS, SHIT LIKE THAT. AND WHEN YOU PUT A SCRAPPY, HARD-WORKING, GRIMEY CAT, AND YOU ADD THAT SICK SENSE OF HUMOR?.. YOU HAVE THE MIND SET OF MOST DETROIT EMCEES. NONE OF US WOULD BE THE SAME IF WE WERE RAISED UP SOMEWHERE ELSE. SiX: You been close to that mainstream break a few times I’m sure, how do you feel about the whole mainstream vs underground issue… like some of these mainstream dudes aren’t seeing any actual money… maybe the indy route pays better - what’s your own experience on that? MAAAN.. IT’S NEVER A SIMPLE ANSWER. THE INDY ROUTE PAYS MORE HONESTLY AND FREQUENTLY.. BUT AT THE SAME TIME, ONE CHECK FROM A MAJOR LABEL COULD PAY WHAT 20 INDY CHECKS DO. ONLY PROBLEM IS THOSE CHECKS ARE FEW AND FAR BETWEEN. I’VE SEEN AND HAD BOTH, AND STILL DO, AND THAT MAKES ME LUCKY…IT’S LIKE THIS THOUGH.. YOU GOTTA BUILD A PIPELINE.. YOU GOTTA WORK 24/7, CUZ WHAT YOU DO TODAY? YOU AINT GETTING PAID FOR TILL NEXT YEAR, PLAIN AND SIMPLE. SO YOU GOTTA KEEP GRINDIN IF YOU WANNA LIVE RIGHT OFF THIS BUSINESS WHETHER IT’S INDY OR MAJOR LABEL BUSINESS. SiX: Like, look what happened to Hush, here’s an artist who can rap, and certainly put in the years… Geffen came along, signed him – payed for a nice album with cats like Talib Kweli featuring, then kinna sat back… do you watch these situ’s and think ‘fuck the industry’, or are you still gunning for that major label exposure that you surely deserve… YOU NEVER STOP WANTIN THOSE BIG CHECKS MAN, AND THE BIG PUSH, AND THE MTV AND BET LOVE, BUT THERE’S A COUPLE PROBLEMS THERE. #1 THE LABELS AINT JUST SIGNING TALENT LIKE THEY USED TO.. THEY SIGN SONGS NOW. THEY DON’T DEVELOP AND WORK WITH ARTISTS… THEY WANT A QUICK HIT. BANG AND YOU’RE DONE. YES, THERE’S A FEW EXCEPTIONS HERE AND THERE, BUT BOTTOM LINE IS THE GAME IS OVER-FLOODED WITH BULLSHIT. #2?? THERE’S TOO MANY RAPPERS. POINT BLANK. LOOK, RAPPING IS EASY. IT REALLY IS FUCKING EASY TO DO. SO EVERY MYSPACE RAPPER WITH FRONTS AND A CHAIN IS LOOKING FOR A DEAL CUZ HE THINKS HE CAN “FLOW”. SO NOW? THERE’S HARDLY NO FANS LEFT! THERE’S BARELY NO ONE LEFT TO JUST LOVE THE ARTIST AND THE MUSIC, BECAUSE MOST OF THE FANS DECIDED THEY CAN RAP TOO!! THE GAME IS IN A STATE OF EMERGENCY. BUT, SPEAKING OF HUSH.. THERE’S STILL REAL TALENT HERE, YOU JUST GOTTA SIFT THRU THE GARBAGE. SiX: Your new studio album is titled “Spill at Will”… speak to us about that record, you got people like Trick Trick on there alongside some other names – run us through the set and what we can expect to hear on there… track wise; have you done an album of bangers or do you feel the set is balanced, you got some deeper shit on there to? MAN, THIS ALBUM IS A BREATH OF FRESH AIR FOR HIP HOP, AND MUSIC IN GENERAL. AND I WOULDN’T SAY THAT UNLESS I HEARD IT FROM PEOPLE WHO KNOW WHAT THE FUCK THEY’RE TALKING ABOUT. YES, THERE’S SOME STRAIGHT UP BANGERS ON THERE, LIKE THIS JOINT “RUUDE” WITH GUILTY SIMPSON AND MARVWON, THERE’S CLUB BANGERS LIKE THE JOINT WITH TRICK TRICK, AND I COULD GO ON AND ON ABOUT THE HEAT ON THERE. BUT THIS ALBUM GOES TO MY SOUL LIKE NO OTHER ALBUM DID BEFORE. I REALLY PULL MY GUTS OUT ON A COUPLE AND LET MAFUCKAS IN. NOT TO MENTION THAT MUSICALLY AND SONICALLY, THIS RECORD RAISES THE BAR. I GOT LIVE BAGPIPES, LIVE PERCUSSION, LIVE INSTRUMENTATION, AND ILL ASS PRODUCTION ALL THE WAY AROUND. THIS RECORD IS MY HEART MAN. __________________________________ PROOF WAS AND IS DETROIT HIP HOP. ANYONE WHO REPS THE CITY AND WASN’T TOUCHED BY PROOF IS EITHER LYING OR DOESN’T MATTER ANYWAY __________________________________ SiX: We have to ask, how did Proof’s passing affect you? He was a friend and a fellow artist with whom you had worked… how much has that affected this new album? PROOF WAS AND IS DETROIT HIP HOP. ANYONE WHO REPS THE CITY AND WASN’T TOUCHED BY PROOF IS EITHER LYING OR DOESN’T MATTER ANYWAY. HE WAS A FRIEND, A FAN, A MENTOR, AND ABOVE ALL A PIONEER AND THE REASON HALF OF US ARE NOT ONLY HERE, BUT WHO WE ARE WHILE WE’RE HERE. AND TO ANSWER THE QUESTION, YEA, THIS ALBUMS HONESTY AND EXPERIMENTATION IS FOR SURE RELATED TO THE PASSING OF MY MAN. THERE WILL NEVER BE A SHOW OR SONG FROM HERE ON OUT THAT PROOF ISN’T SOMEHOW A PIECE OF. SiX: OK, on a lighter note – alongside being a solo artist – you have a hand a few other things… tell us about the KidRock situation… you’re in his band – how’s touring with him? SHIIIIT MAN.. IT IS EXACTLY HOW YOU WOULD THINK IT IS!!! IT’S CRAZY. PLAIN AND SIMPLE. I’M A LUCKY MAFUCKA TO SEE AND DO THE THINGS I SEE AND DO!!! SiX: You ever get to meet Pammy…? OH YEA. SHE WAS MY BOYS WIFE, OF COURSE I KNOW HER! SHE’S A SWEET GIRL. SiX: For the HipHopSiX readers, breakdown the Goon Sqwad for us, how’s that fit into your regime? Break down who’s in that exactly… WELL, GS IS STILL IN IT’S EARLY STAGES, BUT I CAN TELL YOU THAT FROM WHAT WE DONE SO FAR? SHITS GONNA BE RIDICULOUS. IT’S TRICK-TRICK, GUILTY SIMPSON, BAREDA, BLACKFACE, DIEZEL AND MYSELF. TRICK IS THE GENERAL, AND IS PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER, AND WE PRETTY MUCH GONNA KICK THE INDUSTRY IN THE FACE AND SHOOT ITS MOTHER. SiX: You think Goon Sqwad might blow? Is there anything coming up with all you guys on, as a team? WE WOULD BE FOOLS TO GO INTO THIS PROJECT WITHOUT THE INTENT TO BLOW IT UP, SO THAT’S THAT. AND YEA, TRICK’S NEW RECORD KINDA GIVES YOU SOME SNEAK PEEKS, BUT NOTHING WILL BE RELEASED UNTIL WE COMPLETELY READY. SiX: OK, speak on what we should be on the lookout for… upcoming shows and dates to watch for… JULY 21ST IS MY RECORD RELEASE PARTY HERE IN DETROIT AT THE MAGIC STICK. IT’S GONNA BE SICK. I GOT PERFORMANCES BY THE ELITE IN DETROIT.. I GOT TRICK, BLACK MILK, GUILTY, CHIEF, THE FAT KILLAHZ, STREET JUSTICE, AND A SURPRISE LIVE BAND, FUCKIN INSANITY!! OTHER THAN THAT, AFTER THE RECORD DROPS, I’LL BE ALL OVER THE PLACE, SO JUST WATCH FOR ME IN A HOOD NEAR YOU! SiX: Well thanks for your time man, it’s been a pleasure doing this quickfire with you… any last shoutouts… YEA MAN.. SHOUT OUT TO YOU GUYS FOR THE SUPPORT AND ALL OF DETROIT CITY AND GO BUY MY ALBUM!!!
